Direct Access tests allow you to ride any bike straight after passing. There is a misconception that Direct Access must be done via an intensive course. All Direct Access means is you have Direct Access to any bike after passing.

Everyone must pass a Theory Test before booking the Practical Test. The Theory involves a number of multiple choice questions on the Highway Code and general bike related questions and a series of video clips where you have to spot the developing hazards. There are a number of CD Roms and books that can help you swot up for the test.

The practical test is conducted by a DSA examiner who will follow you on another bike (sometimes they will use a car). You will need to show the examiner your driving licence (both parts if it's a photo licence) or a passoprt if you have the old style licence, your CBT certificate and theory certificate.

You'll be asked to read a number plate and then two questions about basic bike maintainance. The road ride lasts 35-40 minutes and takes in all types of road. During the ride you will be asked to do an emergency stop and a u-turn. You only get one go at these excercises.

At the end of the test the examiner will ask you a question about carrying passengers and then give you the result. (He already knows the result before asking you the question).
